1. Set up viewing areas
Consider setting up viewing areas where employees can drop in on the sporting action during the working day. Relax rules for workplace breaks so that employees can time their breaks to coincide with the timetable of the sporting events. Make it clear that you’re providing these to maintain productivity, and a drop off will not be tolerated. Set clear expectations of the amount of time that employees are reasonably allowed to spend watching sport during work hours.
2. Promote flexible working hours around events
Offer your employees the option to flex their working hours during the summer so they can meet their contractual commitments without missing the sporting action.
3. Remind employees of any attendance rules and policies
Even the most responsible employees can get swept up in the excitement, so don’t be afraid to give a gentle reminder of the expectations for workplace attendance and the consequences of failing to adhere to those expectations. Any policies in this area should be brought to the employees’ attention.
Head off likely issues at the outset, for example, calling in sick the day after a big match or, having had holiday refused on the day of a match, calling in sick on that day instead. Make your stance clear on such matters. Let employees know that you will investigate any abuse of absence rules and that they can amount to misconduct.
4. Be flexible as the sporting action unfolds
As Team GB heads for Paris, watch to see how the play unfolds and consider what to do if they’re doing particularly well. For example, if Andy Murray, or your local Olympian, is competing for gold you may want to encourage your employees to support them, even if it’s during the workday. Communicate clearly what you are allowing employees to do in these cases so that everyone knows the parameters.
5. Have fun with your team!!
Use the “summer of sport” as a tool for employee engagement – whether you meet up to watch a match, hold a sweepstake or introduce quizzes to coincide with the sporting events, the team that plays together, stays together. Make the most of the spectacle and you may find it brings people closer and helps to boost morale.
