In whistleblowing and discrimination claims, courts can award compensation for “injury to feelings” (emotional distress) suffered due to unfair treatment. These are called Vento bands, named after a key legal case, Vento v Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police. They provide a framework for assessing damages beyond financial losses. They are updated annually.
For claims made on or after 6 April 2025, the updated bands are:
- Lower band (less serious cases): £1,200 – £12,100
- Middle band (moderate seriousness): £12,100 – £36,400
- Upper band (most serious cases): £36,400 – £60,700
- Exceptional cases: may exceed £60,700
