Vento Bands: Updated compensation limits for 2025

In whistleblowing and discrimination claims, courts can award compensation for “injury to feelings” (emotional distress) suffered due to unfair treatment. These are called Vento bands, named after a key legal case, Vento v Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police. They provide a framework for assessing damages beyond financial losses. They are updated annually.

For claims made on or after 6 April 2025, the updated bands are:

  • Lower band (less serious cases): £1,200 – £12,100
  • Middle band (moderate seriousness): £12,100 – £36,400
  • Upper band (most serious cases): £36,400 – £60,700
  • Exceptional cases: may exceed £60,700
